Current Apprenticeship Schemes

Find out about our current apprenticeship schemes

An apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme. It combines hands-on, workplace experience with formal, off-the-job training. Whether you’re looking for your first role or are already in employment, an apprenticeship offers the opportunity to build new skills and experience that will help you in your career.

As an Imperial apprentice, you will spend at least 6 hours a week on off-the-job training. You will follow a government-approved programme and will work towards a nationally recognised qualification. Imperial College London is a great place to work, and as an apprentice you will be entitled to a competitive salary and excellent staff benefits. Find out more about our staff benefits here.

Frequently Asked Questions for Applicants

Is there an upper age limit?

There is no upper age limit for apprenticeships, which are available to people at any stage of their working life. We welcome applications from people of all ages, although you must be 16 or over when you start your apprenticeship with us.

Are there any minimum entry requirements?

Entry requirements will depend on the programme that you are applying for and the level. Entry to apprenticeships at level 3 generally require Grade 5 (C) or above at GCSE in Maths and English.

What are the advantages of an Imperial apprenticeship?

Imperial College London is a great place to work and as an apprentice you will be entitled to a competitive salary and excellent staff benefits. You will be supported to complete your programme of study and will work towards a nationally recognised qualification. In addition, you will have access to career development support tailored to your ambitions and a flexible, supportive work environment.

What qualifications will I have at the end of the scheme?

This depends on the apprenticeship and the level. Full details will be provided in the job description.

I already have other qualifications; can I still apply?

Apprenticeships are designed to give you skills at a higher level than your existing qualifications - or in a different discipline. It is possible to do an apprenticeship at the same level, or at a lower level, than a qualification that you already have, but only if it will allow you to gain substantive new skills. The content of the training must be different from any prior qualification or previous apprenticeship. If you require further advice about eligibility, please contact us.

Can people apply from outside the UK?

Yes, although you would need to have the right to work in the UK and, generally, to have been resident in the UK (or EEA) for at least three years before you start your apprenticeship. Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor visa applications for Apprenticeship positions as they do not meet the minimum qualifying criteria for sponsorship requirements as laid out in government guidelines. If you require specific advice about your eligibility, please contact us.

When will applications open and how can I apply?

This will depend on the apprenticeship you are applying for. Applications must be made through the College jobs webpage.

What is the selection process?

Again, this will depend on the apprenticeship you are applying for. However, all programmes will require you to complete an online application form. If you are successful, you will then be invited to come and meet us for an interview. Full details of the format and what to expect will be provided in advance. Try not to worry – we are a friendly and supportive recruitment team and want to get the best from applicants!

How long will the apprenticeship last?

This depends on the programme, but it will be at least 12 months.

Once the apprenticeship is complete, will the position naturally roll into regular employment, or would I need to reapply for a permanent position?

Apprenticeships for new staff are offered as fixed-term contracts that are long enough for you to complete your training successfully. On completion, we will support you to apply for other positions within the College or outside.

Is there a relocation allowance or accommodation provided?

We are not able to provide accommodation for apprentices. Any relocation and accommodation costs must be covered by the apprentice.

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

With effect from 21 May 2021, any individual who will be undertaking research activities, at PhD level or above, in one of the Academic Subjects/Fields of Research relevant to ATAS will be required to obtain a free of charge ATAS certificate before they can apply for a visa to work in the UK. This will include research, academic, engineering and technician staff applying for Skilled Worker visas. Some exemptions apply.
